AHFA SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

In 2000, the Alabama Affordable Housing Association (AAHA) created an education scholarship program for residents of member-owned apartment properties in Alabama. The scholarship funds are donated by the owners, contractors, architects, accountants, property management companies, investors, lenders, developers, and various vendors that make up AAHA’s membership as well as other non-member individuals. Since its inception, the AAHA resident scholarship fund has awarded more than $500,000 in college and vocational scholarships.

More Low Income Apartments Offering Child Day Care

Child Care for most working parents is one of the highest priced monthly bills. It can cost thousands of dollars monthly. For the past few years parents have had to make the decision to have 1 parent stay at home to care for the child as their salaries are close to child care costs. We have found that more and more low income housing apartments are now offering child day care services. This is relieving the straing for working parents, not to mention how it is helping single mothers in need of cost savings.

Morning Bus Stop Outreach Program Serving Young Residents of Shepherd's Cove in Auburn, AL

Shepherd’s Cove resident and father of two Churmell Mitchell grew up watching his mother fill more than just bellies with the food she cooked for the neighborhood children. He learned that small acts of love and service can make a large impact. Today, he’s working to feed bodies, hearts and minds within his own community—Shepherd’s Cove in Auburn. Mitchell has been instrumental in developing a morning bus stop outreach for the school age children of the affordable housing community.
